THE OUTLAW KING

Gaining Independence

Robert the Bruce, born in 1274, is one of Scotland’s most celebrated heroes, renowned for his critical role in securing Scottish independence. His early years were marked by a noble lineage and a claim to the Scottish throne, setting the stage for his future endeavors. Initially, Bruce fought alongside William Wallace, another iconic figure in the fight against English oppression. Their partnership was pivotal in keeping the spirit of resistance alive after Wallace’s capture and execution in 1305.

Battle of Bannockburn

Bruce’s defiance of English rule came to a head in 1306 when he controversially killed his rival, John Comyn, in a church. Seizing the moment, Bruce declared himself King of Scots, a bold move that incited the wrath of England’s King Edward I. The ensuing battles were intense, with Bruce employing guerrilla tactics and leading his forces to significant victories, including the decisive Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. This victory was a turning point, significantly weakening English control over Scotland.

Legend Status

By 1328, after years of relentless fighting, the English recognized Scottish independence through the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton. Bruce’s importance in Scottish history is immense; he not only led Scotland to independence but also solidified its national identity and spirit of defiance, leaving a lasting legacy as the champion of a free Scotland.
