By the 2nd century BC, Athens was no longer the mighty empire of old. As its independence waned under Roman influence, so too did its coins take on a “New Style”—a dramatic departure from tradition.

Gone was the squat, side-on owl. In its place stood a sleeker, more lifelike bird, often perched on a ceremonial amphora. Athena now wore a more elaborate helmet, brimming with detail, while the reverse featured decorative flourishes and multiple inscriptions. The coins even added magistrates’ names, making them the ancient equivalent of signing off your work with a flourish.

Although technically beautiful, the New Style lacked the sturdy charm of its predecessor. It whispered sophistication, but also hinted at decline—Athens, still proud, but no longer in charge.
